OSHA MEWP Operator Safety Training


This course qualifies for OSHA Mobile Elevating Work Platform Operator Training as well as Aerial Lift Training.

The MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform) Training course, in compliance with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Standard 1910.67 and ANSI/SAIA A92.24-2018, operators of Vehicle-Mounted Elevating and Rotating Work Platforms. Operators of Scissor Lifts, Vertical Lifts, Boom Lifts, Aerial Bucket Trucks, and similar equipment must be trained in the safe use and operation of this equipment. 

This course provides comprehensive training on the safe and effective use of mobile elevated work platforms. Participants will learn about the various types of MEWPs, their components and functions, how to identify potential hazards and implement safety measures, and covers pre-use inspections, proper positioning, and emergency procedures. Upon completion, participants will have the necessary skills and knowledge to operate a MEWP and minimize risks in the workplace safely. 

 

Under OSHA Regulation § 1910.67 (also called OSHA Standard 1910.67) and ANSI/SAIA A92.24-2018, operators of Vehicle-Mounted Elevating and Rotating Work Platforms are required to be trained in accordance with the following requirements:

  1. Explanations of electrical, fall, and falling object hazards;

  2. Procedures for dealing with hazards;

  3. Recognizing and avoiding unsafe conditions in the work setting;

  4. Instructions for correct operation of the lift (including maximum intended load and load capacity);

  5. Demonstrations of the skills and knowledge needed to operate an aerial lift before operating it on the job;

  6. When and how to perform inspections; and

  7. Manufacturer’s requirements.

This course is designed to comply with these requirements when used in conjunction with vehicle and platform-specific training provided by and through an employer directly.

 Workers should be retrained if any of the following conditions occur:

  • An accident occurs during aerial lift use,

  • Workplace hazards involving an aerial lift are discovered, or

  • A different type of aerial lift is used.

Employers are also required to retrain workers who they observe operating an aerial lift improperly.

Workers who complete this training will be able to:

  • Explain and understand electrical, fall, and falling object hazards inherent in equipment operation;
  • Follow procedures for dealing with hazards;
  • Analyze, recognize, and avoid unsafe conditions in the work setting;
  • Know the instructions for the correct operation of the lift equipment utilized, including the maximum intended load and load capacity;
  • Demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to operate an aerial lift or MEWP before operating it on the job;
  • Determine when and how to perform inspections; and
  • Understand the manufacturer's requirements, rules, and specifications necessary to safely operate the lift or MEWP.
